Hello, my name is Julia and I’m a Food History Nerd. If you’ve come into contact with me through history circles or maybe an online recipe search, then you probably don’t know that I’m also a Wellness Advocate with doTERRA Essential Oils (with the nickname “Julia Patchoulia”).

doTERRA became a part of my life quite accidentally during a time period when I was figuring out how to become a functional human being again after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Essential oils and other natural approaches took on a foundational role in my transition to sleeping better, regaining my energy levels and experiencing a better quality of life.

I was quite excited about the changes I experienced and started to passionately gush about it to people I knew, who as it turned out also wanted a better quality of life, and my doTERRA business was born! Since I felt more energetic, in the meantime I started this Cloud 9 Cookery food history blog.

During my research, I regularly find historic and vintage recipes containing essential oils so I’ve decided it’s time to marry two of my passions: history + doTERRA essential oils.

People use essential oils around the house and to support their emotional & physical health. If you’d like to try out essential oils for the first time, or perhaps you’d like to compare doTERRA’s quality to the brands you’ve already tried, let me know through the form you’ll find below.

I’ll email you back with some questions to help me to figure out the best essential oils to mail to you. You’ll receive a package of a few essential oils and some guidance about how to use them...and if you have questions, I’m always here to answer them.

Ordering doTERRA

This is the place to go if you’d like to order from doTERRA and be hooked up as my customer. The nuances might change from country to country, but I’ve made up this document to help you place your first order, or reach out if you’d like some assistance.

You’ve got two options to become a customer: ordering an Enrollment Kit or paying for a membership and creating a custom first order. I typically recommend an Enrollment Kit because you don’t pay a membership fee, everything is bundled together for cheaper than if you bought each item individually and you’ll have a well-rounded essential oil toolkit that will help you as life changes. If you’re not sure what to put in your shopping cart for your first order, reach out and I’ll give you some advice.

doTERRA’s Testing & Quality

Since many of the historic essential oil recipes that I make on this blog are food recipes, it’s important to stress that most essential oils on the market today are not safe to put in food. For this reason, I’ll always suggest a safe substitute ingredient for the essential oil, like extract. Please look out for your safety and don’t use any old bottle of essential oil in the recipes on this blog! doTERRA has set extremely high testing standards for itself, so doTERRA essential oils can be safely used to flavour food.

The essential oil industry is unregulated, meaning that anything can be inside your bottle of essential oil, even though the word “pure” appears on the label. The Aromatic Plant Research Centre has found that an average of 80% of essential oils on the market are either adulterated or contaminated. Essential oils can be contaminated with substances like pesticides, pathogens or heavy metals. Adulteration occurs to increase profits and can include practices like adding synthetic fragrance, diluting the essential oil, using similar but cheaper plant matter (like adding Lavandin to a “Lavender” essential oil) or augmenting with synthetic versions of chemicals that would be found in a pure essential oil.

Not only are adulterated & contaminated essential oils unsafe to ingest, but they’ll also be less effective (or ineffective) when compared to a pure essential oil. doTERRA calls its testing practices Certified Pure Tested Grade (CPTG) and on average, 176 analyses are run on each batch of essential oil. These tests are carried out by doTERRA’s lab and also external third-party laboratories.

doTERRA posts all Quality Testing results done by a Third-Party Laboratory on the Source to You website, meaning that you can view GC/MS test results done on the essential oil you’re holding in your hand. Enter the ID# (found on the bottom of the bottle) in the ‘Enter your Quality ID’ search bar, then click ‘Download Test Result pdf’. If you don’t have a bottle of doTERRA essential oil, try this batch number from my bottle of Peppermint essential oil: 1810710A

doTERRA’s Ethical Sourcing

I love doTERRA’s quality standards, but what I love even more is doTERRA’s sourcing practices. doTERRA sources the plant matter from the areas of the world with the best growing conditions for that plant, ensuring a better quality essential oil. These essential oils come from 40 countries, 23 of which are considered developing countries. Sustainability and environment stewardship are also keystone standards when it comes to doTERRA’s sourcing practices.

Co-Impact Sourcing is a direct relationship between the farmers & harvesters and doTERRA, cutting out the brokers who often cheat the people working at ground level. Farmers & harvesters are encouraged to form co-operatives and doTERRA ensures fast and fair payment and provides micro-loans to help small-scale farmers get started with plants, seeds and equipment. doTERRA's Healing Hands Foundation works to improve the quality of life for those living in the area, by building wells, schools, medical facilities and bridges.
