After farming in Saskatchewan, Maitland and Dora operated an egg farm in the Cedar Grove community, Ontario (Markham Road and Steeles Avenue). Every Friday, Maitland piled the back of his car with fresh eggs, freshly cleaned old hens and sometimes rhubard and asparagus and delivered farm produce on a route that took him to the Scarborough, Beaches, Rosedale, Forest Hill and Leaside neighbourhoods of Toronto. When gas was scarce during the war years and during times when he had too many customers for one day, Maitland's Egg Route was split in two, visiting each half on alternating Fridays. He carried the items for sale in a baker's basket and kept the money in a leather pouch. During the week between Egg Route days, the money was stored at home in a green metal box.
