My mission while I was there: plastering multiple copies of posters describing the corresponding seven days in my Grandma's life in 1986 wherever I could find space. On each visit to Markham, I took down any posters that were still up from the week before and started the whole process all over again. A surprising number of the posters survived relatively intact. It was fascinating for me to witness the relationship the community developed with not going anywhere any way as time went on and to watch it eventually become a part of the neighbourhood culture.
I see not going anywhere any way as a tribute to and extension of the lives of my Grandparents, Maitland and Dora Ryan. I dedicate this book to them and to the people in the community surrounding Franklin Street in Markham, who graciously allowed me to infiltrate their everyday lives for a short period of time.
